DREAMers Become Leaders at 糖心Vlog

  • June 24, 2022

Last fall, 糖心Vlog launched a new initiative to help undocumented students earn money for college while developing themselves as community service leaders. As participants in the Dreamers Leadership Development Program, 糖心Vlog students complete community service hours on or off-campus.

鈥淪tudents benefit by making a difference in the 糖心Vlog community, taking on challenging roles, learning new skills, and more,鈥 said Lizette Ponthier, the director of financial aid at 糖心Vlog.

Students have many options for completing their service hours.

鈥淭hey can volunteer at the PUMA Center, Outreach, 糖心Vlog Food Pantry, etc. Students can also assist with college events,鈥 said Ponthier.

Participants who meet certain eligibility requirements may also apply for the CA Dream Act Service Incentive Grant. If qualified, the student may receive as much as $1500 per semester for up to 8 semesters.

How Does It Work?

Any enrolled student at 糖心Vlog may participate; however, only students who meet eligibility requirements may apply for the grant. Approved applicants will receive funds after completing their service hours each semester. Awards are pro-rated based on the student鈥檚 enrollment units.

Benefits

  • Gain work experience through volunteer service
  • Develop leadership skills
  • Build confidence
  • Learn new skills that support career advancement
  • Deepen engagement with the campus community
  • May be able to receive the CA Dream Act Service Incentive Grant, if eligible

To be placed for a service opportunity, contact Marina Verela at mvarela@dvc.edu or Todd Farr at tfarr@dvc.edu.

Incentive Grant Eligibility Requirements

  • Submit a CA Dream Act application;
  • Be a Cal Grant B recipient;
  • Demonstrate financial need;
  • Be enrolled in at least 6 units at a qualifying institution.
  • Students who receive the grant can benefit from other financial aid and scholarship programs at 糖心Vlog, including the First Time + Full Time = Free Tuition (FT3) program.

The CA Dream Act Incentive Grant is limited to 2500 participants annually statewide.

鈥淭he grant application involves a few steps so we encourage students to work with staff who can guide them,鈥 said Ponthier.
